From oil tanker attacks to ballistic missile strikes and underwater drones, the US-Iran confrontation is entering dangerous new territory.
The US-Iran conflict in the Middle East appears to have entered a dramatically more dangerous phase.
What began with attacks involving Iranian oil tankers has rapidly escalated into retaliatory strikes, attacks on shipping routes, damage to US military aircraft in Jordan, and a widening maritime danger zone around the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.
And now, another question is hanging over the conflict: How far can this escalation go before it triggers an even bigger regional crisis?
The Conflict Is No Longer Contained
According to the Iranian Students News Network (SNN), citing local sources, the US reportedly attacked five Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island in an operation involving US naval forces.

Iran's response was swift. The retaliation reportedly extended beyond the immediate maritime confrontation, with Iranian forces claiming attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz and strikes against a US-linked military presence in Jordan. This matters because Jordan is geographically different from the Gulf states that have traditionally been at the centre of US-Iran tensions.
The message appears clear: Iran wants to demonstrate that the battlefield is not limited to the Gulf.

US Aircraft Damaged in Jordan?
Between September 8 and 9, 2026, Iran reportedly launched a barrage of ballistic missiles toward Muwaffaq Salti Air Base near Al-Azraq in Jordan, a strategically important facility used by U.S. forces. Jordanian air defenses managed to intercept 18 of the 20 missiles, while the other two came down in uninhabited areas. No casualties were reported, although several U.S. aircraft were reportedly damaged despite the successful interceptions. The reported damage allegedly involved multiple US aircraft, including A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-15E aircraft and potentially other aircraft whose status was not yet confirmed.

But there is an important distinction here. These aircraft were reportedly parked at the airbase, rather than being shot down during an aerial combat mission over Iranian territory. That distinction completely changes how the incident should be interpreted.

Why Is the A-10 Thunderbolt II Important?
The A-10 Thunderbolt II, famously known as the Warthog, is one of the most distinctive aircraft in the US military arsenal. Unlike conventional fighter aircraft designed primarily for air-to-air combat, the A-10 was built around close air support. Its mission is to operate relatively close to ground forces and attack targets such as armoured vehicles, tanks, artillery positions, and ground forces.

Its rugged design enables it to withstand significant damage and continue operating. But in this incident, the A-10 was not destroyed during a combat sortie. It was reportedly sitting at the Jordanian airbase when ballistic missiles struck the facility.
That makes the incident less about an aircraft-versus-aircraft engagement and more about the vulnerability of military infrastructure itself.
How Did Iran Get Through the Air Defenses?
This is perhaps the most important military question. Jordan and US forces would be expected to have sophisticated air-defense systems protecting strategically important military installations. So how could missiles still reach the airbase? The answer lies in a basic principle of modern missile warfare: Saturation. An attacker doesn't necessarily need every missile to penetrate an air-defense network.
Imagine 20 missiles are launched simultaneously. If an air-defense system successfully intercepts 18, that sounds like an extremely high interception rate. But the remaining two missiles can still cause significant damage if they reach valuable targets. And an airbase is packed with high-value assets. Aircraft, fuel, ammunition, personnel, command facilities and other infrastructure can all become targets.
This is precisely why the incident matters: even highly capable air-defense systems cannot guarantee that every incoming missile will be intercepted.
Why Would Iran Target an Airbase?
There is a strategic logic behind attacking an airbase. During an air-to-air engagement, an aircraft is moving, manoeuvring, and actively defending itself. On the ground, however, dozens of aircraft may be concentrated in one location.
That creates a tempting target. A single successful missile strike can potentially damage multiple aircraft and supporting infrastructure without requiring the attacker to engage those aircraft individually in the air.
It portrays military airbases as particularly attractive targets in a conflict where Iran faces a much more powerful US conventional military force.
Why Muwaffaq Salti Air Base Matters
The location of the Jordanian airbase makes the reported attack even more strategically significant. The base is located near Al-Azraq, roughly 100 kilometres from Amman, and sits in a strategically important part of the region. Jordan borders or lies close to several key countries, Iraq, Syria and Israel. That gives the country enormous strategic value for military operations across the region.
The US has used Jordan as a relatively secure base from which aircraft can be deployed and regional operations supported.

But if an adversary demonstrates that even such a location can be targeted with ballistic missiles, US planners may have to rethink the security assumptions surrounding regional bases. And that could have consequences far beyond a single airbase.
The Strait of Hormuz Is Getting Even More Dangerous
The conflict is also moving deeper into the maritime domain. Iran reportedly claimed attacks involving US vessels and oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, describing the strikes as retaliation for the earlier attacks on Iranian oil tankers.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important energy corridors. Any serious disruption here can send shockwaves through global energy markets. The danger zone may now be expanding beyond Hormuz itself.
The Gulf of Oman is increasingly being portrayed as another area of concern for commercial shipping. That matters enormously for countries such as India, which depend heavily on maritime energy imports.
Oil Crosses $100: Is This Just the Beginning?
The escalation has already led to a surge in oil prices. Crude oil has crossed the $100-per-barrel level, and $100 is not necessarily a ceiling.

If attacks continue, shipping routes become increasingly risky, and oil supplies face further disruption, prices could potentially climb even higher. Yet another $20-per-barrel increase could become possible if the conflict intensifies. For India, the implications are especially significant.
Higher oil prices can mean higher economic pressure.
India imports a substantial amount of its crude oil requirements. When global oil prices rise sharply, the impact can ripple through:
Fuel prices → Transportation costs → Inflation → Business costs → Household expenses
In other words, a war thousands of kilometres away can eventually show up in everyday economic life.
Iran's Asymmetric Warfare Strategy
But why would Iran target commercial shipping when the US Navy is vastly more powerful? Because Iran does not necessarily need to defeat the US Navy in a conventional head-to-head battle.
Instead, it can attempt to make the conflict increasingly expensive and complicated for the United States. This is where the concept of asymmetric warfare becomes important. Rather than matching an opponent's military strength directly, a weaker power can exploit vulnerabilities in areas such as:
Commercial shipping
Energy infrastructure
Military bases
Supply routes
Strategic chokepoints
The objective isn't necessarily to win a conventional naval battle. It can be to increase the economic, logistical and political cost of continuing the war.
The Underwater Drone Mystery
Then comes another fascinating development. Iran reportedly claimed that it had captured a US underwater vehicle near the Strait of Hormuz.
But there is an important clarification: This was reportedly not a conventional submarine carrying military personnel. Instead, it was an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV), essentially an underwater robotic platform.

Think of it as the underwater equivalent of a drone. Such systems can be used for missions including:
Intelligence gathering
Underwater reconnaissance
Seabed mapping
Oceanographic data collection
Surveillance
Iran reportedly presented the capture as a significant operational achievement. The US, however, reportedly acknowledged that an underwater drone had been taken while emphasizing that the platform was an older system and did not contain particularly sensitive secrets.
What Is This Underwater Vehicle Capable Of?
This underwater system described is approximately 5.8 metres long, can operate for around 10 days, and can dive to depths of approximately 6,000 metres. Those capabilities illustrate how modern warfare is increasingly moving beyond traditional fighter jets, tanks and warships. The battlefield is becoming multidimensional: “Air. Land. Sea. Cyber. Space. And increasingly, autonomous systems.”
The Bigger Question: Where Does This Escalation End?
The most worrying aspect of the current confrontation is not necessarily any single missile strike, damaged aircraft or captured underwater drone. It is the cycle of retaliation.
One side attacks. The other retaliates. That retaliation triggers another response. And the cycle continues.
While the conflict appears to be escalating rapidly, it remains uncertain where this cycle of escalation will ultimately end. The critical questions now are:
Will attacks on military bases continue? Will commercial shipping become an even bigger target? Could the Strait of Hormuz face serious disruption? How high can oil prices go?
And most importantly, could this conflict pull more countries directly into the war?
What This Means for the World
The US-Iran confrontation is no longer simply a bilateral military dispute. If maritime shipping becomes increasingly dangerous, the consequences could spread across global trade. If oil supplies are disrupted, energy prices could rise. If US military bases across the region come under sustained attack, Washington could be forced to expand its military response. And if more regional powers become involved, what began as a confrontation between two countries could evolve into a much larger Middle Eastern crisis.
The next few developments could therefore matter not just for Washington and Tehran, but for global energy markets, international shipping and economies such as India's.
